Good ideas don’t always have to be complicated: Thanks to targeted aerodynamic measures such as air vent control, the active rear spoiler or the Air Curtain in the front apron, your BMW is able to achieve an optimised drag coefficient. Active rear spoiler.

As speed increases, there is a rise in the forces acting on the body of the vehicle. At a speed of 110 km/h, the active rear spoiler extends automatically. Drag is reduced, roadholding is optimised, lift on the rear axles is decreased. In addition, fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions are reduced. At a speed of 70 km/h, the rear spoiler retracts automatically.

Air Curtain.

While you control your vehicle, the Air Curtain controls the airstream. This is because it reduces the air resistance of the body in an astonishingly simple, yet highly effective way. Its narrowing channels speed up the airstream and guide it past the wheels. This reduces the air turbulence in the wheel housings and decreases the drag due to the body as well as the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Air vent control.

The air vent control knows when engine, brakes and other components need air and automatically opens the air vents. If no further air intake is required, it closes them again. This improves aerodynamics, and fuel consumption falls.

Air Blade.

The Air Blade is a sharp-edged extension of the C-pillar that separates the air flow and thus reduces the wake behind the vehicle. This lowers the aerodynamic drag at the rear, which in turn reduces both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Air Breather.

You accelerate. You’re moving faster and faster. But you still cannot detect any air resistance. This is because the Air Breather channels the air on the front wheels. It reduces turbulence on the wheel housings and breaks down the air swirls. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are decreased.

Brake Energy Regeneration.

You press down on the brake. At the same time, energy is produced. Valuable kinetic energy that can be exploited. Brake Energy Regeneration transforms it into electrical energy and uses it to charge the battery instead of letting it dissipate to no effect. Less effort is also required from the engine to charge the battery, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

ECO PRO mode.

Concentrate on the driving pleasure. Efficiency is available at the press of a button. The ECO PRO mode permits fuel savings of up to 20%, without you having to take any action. Approximately 5% of fuel can be saved by means of additional functions. The overall saving is converted into a specific mileage and displayed as a bonus range in the on-board computer. As a result, it is possible to see what distance can still be covered at all times.

Electric Power Steering.

Conventional systems for supporting the driver’s steering power work with hydraulics. They are in permanent operation – even if the driver is not moving the steering wheel at all. And this costs energy. In the case of Electric Power Steering, an electric motor replaces the hydraulics and only becomes active when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. On straight roads or with a constant steering angle in corners, the system does not intervene and uses no energy. Fuel consumption is reduced as a result, while the typical BMW dynamic driving experience is retained.

BMW Efficient Dynamics, mild hybrid technology


The mild hybrid technology serves to recuperate the kinetic energy during braking and supports the combustion engine during acceleration. This reduces fuel consumption and emissions while giving you a dynamic advantage. The mild hybrid technology also makes the Automatic Start/Stop function much faster and much more comfortable.


Different situations demand individual actions. Energy-saving technologies such as the Optimum Shift Indicator or the Automatic Stop/Start function help the driver to choose a better course of action and thus drive more efficiently.

  • Optimum Shift Indicator

    Choosing the right moment to change gear is a key to efficiency. The most efficient gear at any point in time is calculated according to the driving situation together with the engine speed and then shown in the Info Display.

    The system also recognises rapid acceleration and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed is up. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around four per cent less fuel.

  • Automatic Start/Stop function

    Save fuel effectively: The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only consumed when the car is moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary stop, for example at traffic lights or in congested traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by simply switching off the engine. As soon as the clutch is depressed (manual transmission) or the brake is released (Steptronic transmission), the engine starts up again automatically in a fraction of a second.

  • Tyres with reduced rolling resistance

    On the motorway. In the city. Everywhere. Wherever you drive – your tyres are constantly subjected to powerful forces during driving. During contact with the road, their shape changes. This deformation is only reversed when there is no more road contact. Tyres with reduced rolling resistance employ special materials to reinforce the tread and sidewalls which decrease flexing compared to conventionally designed tyres – and this noticeably reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model.

The values of the vehicles labeled with (3), are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles.
